The "Bradley" arrives at the planet only slighly ahead of the "Raga" ("Passion," KL 14523) laying claim to the planet in the name of the Klingon Empire. Star Fleet had been expecting this move how- ever, as it had been known for some time that the Klingons were very inter- ested in duplicating the genetic makeup of the planet's native species of chest-bursting parasites. The powerful Klingon warship is defeated and forced to self-destruct but the "Bradley" provides Star Fleet with valuable data concerning the destroyer's capabilities [SotF, SsD, FRS].

The practice of separate insignia for each starship is abolished, and the "Enterprise" emblem is adopted as the official symbol for the entire Star Fleet [NTM].

The U.S.S. "Atalanti" (NCC-3212) "Daran" class fast frigate is launched [SotF].

17 May
The U.S.S. "Knox" (NCC-1940) frigate is commissioned. Essentially scaled- down "Avenger" heavy frigates, 26 in all will be built (NCC-1940-NCC-1965). Armed with only phasers (no torpedoes), a complement of 350, and a warp capacity of 11, these ships will replace the converted "Surya" frigates. Having increased speed and even greater maneuverability than the "Avenger" heavy frigates, they will be used for similar missions but closer to the U.F.P.'s interior [SotF, FRS, SsD, LOR, SFD].

The U.S.S. "Knox" will later, on stardate 7904.36, intercept a coded distress signal while on patrol along the disputed region of Federation- Klingon borderspace. The message, originating from a vessel in Klingon space and directed at the Klingon construction facility in the Kohl star system, indicates that a prototype warship had developed an imbalance in its warpfield generating capabilities while on trials. The resulting wormhole had left it unable to move or navigate. The "Knox" immediately dispatches two surveillance drones to examine the stricken vessel. What is discovered is a new Klingon destroyer, representing a substantial improvement over the "K't'inga" class of battlecruisers: the D-9 "K'teremny" ("Great Slayer of Enemies," KL 44104) class warship [FRS].

With warp 15 capability, a crew of 485, and--like the "Federation"--three LN-64 propulsion units. A built-up ver- sion of the "Belknap" class. Long-range coupled with truly high speed capabilities make the "Ascension" and her sisters ideal for investigating trouble spots throughout the U.F.P. Treaty Zone--as they happen, and espec- ially for emergency rescue operations. For these reasons, they are stat- ioned in a disperse pattern throughout the U.F.P., with at least one based at every major starbase [FRS, LOR, SsD, DDS, SFD].

[Y 168] The Klingons also introduce dreadnoughts, as well as chaff for fighters. The Klingon CV(T) and hanger pod enters service. The First General War begins when war erupts on the Lyran-Kzinti border. This is first known as the Fifth Lyran-Kzinti War, but rapidly escalates. March [reference stardate 2/1803] The Kargon Incident: A U.F.P. outpost located in the Orion sector of space is attacked by a group of six Klingon D-18Bs, commanded by Captain Kresz sutai-Kargon. The U.S.S. "Kongo" (NCC-1710) accompanied by two "Loknar" class frigates, the U.S.S. "Halk" (NCC-2742) and U.S.S. "Rome" (NCC-2726) respond to the outpost's distress call. The ships arrive too late to save the outpost, but not too late to engage the Klingons. Detecting only three ships on sensors, one with severe damage and the others with minor damage, Captain J.C. Fredriksen of the "Kongo" orders the frigates to close with the Klingons and demand their surrender. In the meantime, the "Kongo" approaches the D-18 lying dead in space. As the "Kongo" nears the vessel, sensors pick up three ships coming out of warp to the rear and the systems aboard the dead ship coming to life. The damaged D-18 destructs with such tremendous force that the "Kongo's" starboard nacelle is ripped from the hull and the port engine is damaged beyond repair. The incoming D-18s fire into the burning wreck of the "Kongo" and complete the deed their comrades had begun. The "Halk," also taken by surprise, never has a chance to return fire and the first volley of shots from the oncoming D-18s totally destroy the frigate. The "Rome," however, opens fire on one of the dis- abled D-18s and scores two photon torpedo hits on its bridge and numerous phaser hits to its engines. Turning on the other disabled D-18, the "Rome" begins firing as fast as it can, scoring hits with every shot. The D-18s rushing in from their attack on the "Halk" fire in unison, and the "Rome" suffers the same fate as the other two Star Fleet vessels. News of this attack reaches Star Fleet three days later when a communications marker from the "Rome" is retrieved. From this report it is also learned that the Klingon ships in this engagement were painted in bright blue colors. Ships of this description are later seen in and near the Triangle. Whether they are the ships of Captain Kresz sutai-Kargon are not known [FASA].

July Temerand and Jeffries Transdimensional Dynamics announce they have developed a new "bottle containment" apparatus for the dilithium gas piping and antimatter conduit system. This development is the result of tests that revealed the formation of fissures in the propulsion shaft coupling units. These fissures were caused by an overtaxing of the coupling units during high-velocity (above warp 20) warp maneuvering of Prototype No. 2, resulting in partial or complete loss of the impulse amplification crystal. This necessitates the addition of a second, back-up amplification crystal to the "Akyazi" design. The containment apparatus will be perfected in time for inclusion in the "Arbiter" sub-class [SotF2].

[Y 174] The Gorns join up with the U.F.P. The First General War has now reached virtually complete escalation. The Grand Alliance (Gorn-Federation-Kzinti) fleets battle Romulan-Klingon-Lyran fleets.
