The "Bonhomme Richard" class starships are classified as heavy cruisers and authorized [SotF, TM].

January The first 8 ships of the "Endeavor" class are originally authorized as heavy cruisers after the outbreak of hostitilies which will lead to the Four Years War [SotF].

The U.S.S. "Ashanti" (NCC-1237) "Coventry" class frigate is laid down at Athinai-Volos Ltd., Athens, Earth [SotF].

Star Fleet develops an improved deflector shield system from studying Roy Moss's deflector principles implemented on the "Shark." He never is given the credit for his achievement although the technology will ensure relatively safe space exploration and battle survival rates over the next half century [GN 12].

February [reference stardate 1/9402] The U.S.S. "Hannibal" (NCC-4350) Mark I "Larson" class destroyer and the U.S.S. "Antares" (NCC-2714) Mark I "Loknar" class frigate enter service [FASA].

Charles Evans is stranded on Thasus after a transport crash [CX].

Montgomery Scott enters the Star Fleet Merchant Marines as a certified tachyon engineer. He is assigned as 2nd Engineer to the science-probe vessel U.S.S. "Deneb Queen" [EOM].

17 February
The U.S.S. "Dromio" (NCC-1866) "Surya" class frigate is laid down at Vickers Shipbuilding Group Ltd., New London, England, Earth [SotF].

James Kirk enters the Star Fleet Academy as a midshipman. He romances Ruth Bonne, an assistant professor, and is bullied by Bruce Finnegan, an upperclassmate. Thomas Clayton will be Kirk's roommate for the first two years. Kirk will room together with Robert Jordan, a classmate, during his final year [EOM, SL, ON 9, TOS #69].

Lt. Sepel dies in a violent alien encounter on Lindoria while serving on the "Musashi" [TOS #44].

Charlotte Sanchez meets James Kirk [TOS #36].

The U.S.S. "Sverdlov" (NCC-1238) "Coventry" class frigate is laid down at Newport News Shipbuilding, Louisiana, Earth [SotF].

05 June [reference stardate 1/9406.05]
On routine patrol, the U.S.S. "Bonhomme Richard" locates and retrieves the U.S.S. "Gulliver's" recorder buoy, which reveals the vessel's fate. In light of the recent Arcanis massacre, the Federation Council demands that the Klingon forces at Axanar withdraw to their border under Star Fleet escort. The Klingon Admiral at Axanar is permitted four months to receive instructions from his Empire. The U.S.S. "Xenophon" is already on its way to Axanar [FASA].

06 June
The U.S.S. "Bonhomme Richard" (NCC-1712), lead ship of a new heavy cruiser class, is laid down at UESPA, Star Fleet Division, San Francisco Yards, Earth [HCE, SotF].

June [reference stardate 1/9406] The U.S.S. "Thermoplae" (NCC-4351) Mark I "Larson" class destroyer and the U.S.S. "Argus City" (NCC-2715) Mark I "Loknar" class frigate enter service [FASA].

09 July [reference stardate 1/9407.09]
Garth reaches Axanar several hours before the "Bonhomme Richard", and so is given command of a scout squadron assigned to monitor the Klingon task force [FASA].

11 July
The U.S.S. "Eltanin" (NCC-1239) "Coventry" class frigate is laid down at Athinai-Volos Ltd., Athens, Earth [SotF].

08 August
The U.S.S. "Dardanius" (NCC-1871) "Surya" class frigate is laid down at Vickers Shipbuilding Group Ltd., New London, England, Earth [SotF].

29 August [reference stardate 1/9408.29]
One of the scouts near Axanar picks up a second, incoming Klingon task force. Despite being outnumbered, Garth quickly implements a tactical plan that results in his victory at the Battle of Axanar, preventing the Klingons from establishing a supply line to forces already massed there. Unaware of the results of the First Battle of Axanar, and secure in the belief that the Axanar research facility is safe, the Klingon Empire declares war on the U.F.P. exactly one month later [FASA].

September [reference stardate 1/9409] The U.S.S. "Scipio" (NCC-4352), "Cannae" (NCC-4353), "Alesia" (NCC-4354), and "Marc Antony" (NCC-4355) Mark I "Larson" class destroyers and the U.S.S. "New York" (NCC-2716) Mark I "Loknar" class frigate enter service [FASA].

14 September
The U.S.S. "Durmitov" (NCC-1853) "Surya" class frigate is commissioned [SotF].

September [reference stardate 1/9409] The "Loknar" class frigate U.S.S. "Morgan City" (NCC-2704) is captured by Admiral Kamato's forces. It will later be renamed the IKSV "Straave'eMara" ("Slave Of Justice") and be used in Kamato's abortive coup attempt on the Klingon throne. After failing, Kamato will retreat into the Triangle tak- ing the "Loknar" class frigate with him. From their location in the Tri- angle, the Klingon rebels will attack unprotected convoys and merchant ves- sels by using the "Straave'eMara" to lure them in. This ruse will last several years until the general recall of all "Loknar" class vessels make it difficult for the Klingon vessel to operate. The IKV Admiralty event- ually decides to have the vessel painted in the standard steel-gray color of their Navy and keeps the ship in active service [FASA].

29 September [reference stardate 1/9409.29]
In response to the Federation Council, Admiral Kkorhetza refuses to with- draw his ships from Federation territory, issuing a formal declaration of alliance with the natives on Axanar. This results in a state of war be- tween the U.F.P. and the Klingon Empire, and the Four Years War begins. At the Second Battle of Axanar, Captain Garth (his small command now reinfor- ced by Star Fleet) defeats Kkorhetza's forces and is awarded the Federation Medal of Valor. Though tactical experts expect the Romulans to enter the war on one side or the other, they do not [FASA, FRS, SotF].

The "Loknar" class frigate U.S.S. "Vernol" (NCC-2702) is destroyed in the Four Years War [FASA].

October [reference stardate 1/9410] Over the next six months, the Klingons win the decisive Battles of Andromeda, Genmarx, Lea, Lyclydun, and Janni IV. Though somewhat weak in tactical skill, they make up for it in numbers, often outnumbering U.F.P. defending forces three or four to one [FASA].

The U.S.S. "Liu Pang" (NCC-4356) Mark I "Larson" class destroyer enters service [FASA].

December [reference stardate 1/9412] Researchers at HiBeam Energies, Ltd. develop the ship-mounted phaser. Hasty installation of the phasers onto Star Fleet vessels causes numerous accidents. Phasers are withdrawn from service for additional tests [FASA].

The "Surya" class frigate NCC-1876 originally named "Indomitable" is renamed "Nar-Tak Shir" [SotF].

08 January
The U.S.S. "Pralaya" (NCC-1855) "Surya" class frigate is launched [SotF].

January [reference stardate 1/9501] Robert April retires from Star Fleet after quietly speaking out against certain Federation policies. He continues to serve as an ambassador-at- large [FASA].

The Battle of Axanar is fought [EOM, STM].

The U.S.S. "Orleans" (NCC-4360) Mark I "Larson" class destroyer and the U.S.S. "Boridi" (NCC-2717) Mark I "Loknar" class frigate enter service [FASA].

The Andor Planetary Government originates the Andorian Battle Star award for commanders of Star Fleet vessels, any class or category, who have dem- onstrated superior tactical abilities in a combat situation, either person- al or command-oriented. It is a 4-pointed titanium star with a center sapphire, hung from a blue and white ribbon [FASA].

The Klingon G-8 "Plen Zha" ("Trader's Game") class cargo freighters enter service [FASA].

15 January
The U.S.S. "Indus" (NCC-1243) "Coventry" class frigate is laid down at Star Fleet Division, Puget Sound Yards, Earth [SotF].

Cloaking devices, much perfected by this time, are installed on Romulan vessels operating on the U.F.P. border. Smaller vessels are equipped first and sent into Federation territory to learn what they can of Federation forces and their disposition. Instructed not to let the Federation disc- over they are Romulan vessels, they are given orders to self-destruct if caught. These privateers capture or destroy many Federation merchants and scouts. The Federation is unaware of the true nature of the disappearances for some time, and attributes them to Orions and other pirates [FASA].

The D-4A "D'ama" class cruiser is withdrawn from service in the Klingon Fleet [FASA].

The G-8A "Plen Zha" class cargo freighter enters service in the Klingon Fleet [FASA].

10 February [reference stardate 1/9502.10]
First contact with the Romulan "Graceful Flyer" class scout/courier ship occurs within the Neutral Zone area as reported by an automated, zone- intrusion detection satellite [FASA].

12 February

April [reference stardate 1/9504] Over the next three months, the Klingons continue their inexorable penet- ration of U.F.P. territory dealing the U.F.P. heavy losses particularly in the Battle of GR-1 and the Assault of Nozseca VIII. The U.S.S. "Moscow" (NCC-2718) Mark I "Loknar" class frigate enters service [FASA].

The U.S.S. "Santander" (NCC-1232) "Coventry" class frigate is launched [SotF].

The U.S.S. "Coventry" (NCC-1230) prototype frigate is launched [SotF].

13 June
The U.S.S. "Pralaya" (NCC-1855) "Surya" class frigate is commissioned [SotF].

June [reference stardate 1/9506] After distinguishing himself in the Battle of Axanar, Captain Christopher R. Pike commands the "Enterprise," with Lt. Spock as Science Officer/Second Officer. Pike is the youngest Academy graduate ever to command a starship (his successor will be even younger). A new five-year mission begins with the "Enterprise" deployed primarily as a survey vessel. During Pike's com- mand, he will participate in over 200 planetary surveys including the init- ial contacts with Alpha Majoris I, Antos IV, Barlow's Planet, Berengaria VII, Coridon, Gamma Vertis IV, Lavinius VI, Manark IV, Rigel VII, Talos IV, Thasus, and Typerius II. Lieutenant (j.g.) Montgomery Scott serves aboard the "Enterprise" for the first time, under Chief Engineer Caitlin Barry [FASA, EOM, TOS #44].

The "Loknar" class frigate "Borga" (NCC-2709) is destroyed in the Four Years War [FASA].

The U.S.S. "Tiberius" (NCC-4363), "Charlemagne" (NCC-4364), "Jauhur" (NCC-4366) and "Alexander" (NCC-4367) Mark I "Larson" class destroyers enter service [FASA].

The U.S.S. "Pharsalus" (NCC-4311) and "Buena Vista" (NCC-4322), "Larson" class destroyers, are destroyed in the Four Years War [FASA].

The U.S.S. "Brilliant" (NCC-1858) "Surya" class frigate is launched [SotF].

July [reference stardate 1/9507] The attack on Convoy Y-162 near the Revonet system marks the first significant Klingon defeat. In this battle, the Klingons do not have superior numbers and it shows what the U.F.P.'s superior tactical ability can accomplish when the odds are more even [FASA].

12 July
The U.S.S. "Dahlgren" (NCC-1234) "Coventry" class frigate is launched [SotF].

The U.S.S. "Saladin" (NCC-4368) Mark I "Larson" class destroyer enters service [FASA].

19 July
The U.S.S. "Monitor" (NCC-1713) "Bonhomme Richard" class heavy cruiser is laid down at UESPA, Star Fleet Divison, San Francisco Yards, Earth. The U.S.S. "Hashira" (NCC-1856) "Surya" class frigate is commissioned [HCE, SotF].

At the Star Fleet Academy Lunar Station, Cadet Kirk successfully passes the "bug-spot event" test in the Gernsback crater [ON 15].

After completing his internship, Dr. McCoy serves as a surgeon-trainee aboard the heavy cruiser U.S.S. "Hood" (NCC-1707) with the brevet rank of Lt. Commander [EOM].

[Y 141] The Third Klingo-Hydran War ends. The Hydrans have gained no territory, but have regained their self-respect. For reasons that remain obscure, four new kings take the throne in less than one year. The last king, Hydraxan XVI, manages to hold power for two years [SFB].

07 September [reference stardate 1/9509.07]
As a result of the numerous ship disappearances, Star Fleet Command orders the Zone of Transport Escort for a large region of Federation space. This order restricts movement of private and commercial starships, requires nav- al escort for vessels travelling in the restricted area, and places armed marines aboard all escorted ships. These new regulations remain in effect until after the war. The Zone order significantly reduces the frequency of piracy attempts and unexplained starship disappearances [FASA].

13 September
The U.S.S. "Andalucia" (NCC-1857) "Surya" class frigate is commissioned [SotF].

16 September
The U.S.S. "Courageous" (NCC-1861) "Surya" class frigate is launched [SotF].

The U.S.S. "Balthasar" (NCC-1867) "Surya" class frigate is launched [SotF].

January [reference stardate 1/9601] The Battle of Sinbad IV marks the first major confrontation between ground troops of the opposing forces. The Battle of Delgon-R marks the first use of Klingon gravitic mines and the first defensive action by Klingon forces. The Klingons lose 30,000 highly skilled ground troops, including a crack Klingon Imperial guards battalion, in the Sinbad IV battle [FASA].

17 January
The U.S.S. "Coventry" (NCC-1230) frigate is commissioned. These high-warp frigates, each with a complement of 315, will replace the "Surya" class. Fourteen will be built (NCC-1230-NCC-1243) [SotF, AES].

The Imperial Navy has penetrated as deep as 15 parsecs into certain sectors of U.F.P. space, but is seriously overtaxed [FASA].

March [reference stardate 1/9603] Star Fleet withdraws "Constitution" class cruisers from front-line combat duty against Klingon forces. The class will continue to serve on other fronts in its pre-war capacities [FASA].

The Karagite Order of Heroism decoration is originated by the U.F.P. Exec- utive Council. It is a stylized humanoid female with outstretched arms grasping an upraised sword attached to scarlet and white horizontal stri- pes, awarded to individuals who have shown conspicuous heroism in defense of U.F.P. worlds and their populations in times of conflict. The decor- ation is named in honor of the successful Star Fleet Marine defense of the planet Karag against Klingon invaders during the Four Years War [FASA].

The Mark II "Loknar" class frigates enter service, mounting newer warp drive systems providing 60% more power than the older units and increasing the ships' overall performance. The most significant advance in technology is the incorporation of 8 phaser emplacements, delivering more firepower at longer ranges, weighing less, and requiring less structural reinforcing than the laser banks. The newly developed photon torpedo, delivering the same explosive power at 75% less power requirement, considerably lighter and requiring less structural reinforcement than the accelerator cannon, is also incorporated in the form of 4 tubes. The "Loknar" class becomes more powerful than anything in the Klingon fleet with the exception of the D-10. The Mark II also mounts an upgraded binary shield generator, the FSK, giving 33% more protection at the same output level as the earlier system [FASA].

The Confederation of Tellar proposes the Grankite Order of Honor decor- ation. Issued by special order of the Commandant of Star Fleet Academy, to cadets who, during their tour of study at Star Fleet Academy, demonstrate selfless heroism in support of the U.F.P. and Star Fleet Command. The decoration is named in honor of Grankess'Lorr, a Tellarite cadet who is the first recipient.
